Why does my computer or laptop not see the phone via USB? What to do?

Users are not uncommon with this situation: they connect their smartphone and the computer or laptop does not see it. Rather, it’s right to say that most often it does not see the file system, while the device itself is displayed. What to do, what to do in such a situation? Let’s understand.

Grant file system access

From a certain point, the Android system prohibits access to the default file system when connected to a PC or laptop. This is done in order to protect the files that are on your smartphone, because if the device is “password protected”, only you can provide access to the file system. Actually a very correct and useful feature.

Now let’s understand specifically – and you will understand what we are talking about. Take the USB cable, connect it with one side to the phone, the other – to the USB port of a laptop or computer. If the smartphone screen is locked, unlock it – in this case, you will probably see such a menu:

The item “File Transfer” provides access to the file system, and the “Photo Transfer (PTP)” – to the photos that you took using your smartphone.

Above is an example based on Xiaomi and MIUI, on a Honor or Huawei smartphone, the menu is almost the same:

If you don’t see any menu, then swipe from the top of the screen to the bottom to see the quick menu. In it you will probably see something like this message:

Click on it and then the menu will open..

Already in it you select either “File Transfer” or “Photo Transfer (PTP)” – as needed. Just remember that in the second case only photos are available, and in the first – almost the entire file system.

What’s next? After you select the desired menu item, open “My Computer” on a PC or laptop and select your smartphone.

An internal drive will be available to you, and if there is a memory card, then so will it. We do not have a memory card.

Access to the file system of the smartphone was obtained.

If you do not provide it, then the device is detected, but if you open it, you will see absolutely nothing.

Restart your computer and smartphone

If the case described above does not concern you, then the first thing to do is restart the smartphone:

And the computer:

If there is a software failure, a reboot will certainly help to cope with it..

Check USB cable and ports

There is a high probability that the problem is “hidden” in the cable, so the smartphone does not see the PC. Check cable for damage and replace if necessary.

Also try reinstalling the cable into a different USB port – often the matter is in the ports, and this is important in the first place for those ports that are located on the front of the PC system unit.

Enable USB debugging

First you need to enable developer mode, then USB debugging. As for the developer mode, we have repeatedly told how to turn it on – instructions on the next page.

Next, find the appeared section for developers in the main menu. For example, on Xiaomi and MIUI you need to open “Advanced Settings”.

Select “For Developers”.

Then find the debugging mode via USB and turn it on.

After that, try connecting your smartphone to a PC or laptop..

Try changing the default USB configuration

All in the same section for developers, find the item “USB Configuration”.

And change it to “File Transfer” (MTP in the example).

Then check if the device sees the computer.

Install drivers for your device

They are googled very simply: drivers + model of your smartphone, or, even better, find them on the w3bsit3-dns.com forum and install them on your PC or laptop.

Install Android File Transfer

This is the official file transfer app for Android devices. You can download it on the official website: android.com/filetransfer

What else can be done?

We would advise connecting your smartphone to another device. If in this case the smartphone is visible, then the matter is in the first device. If the smartphone is still not visible, most likely it is in it. Perhaps this is a software problem or even a mechanical one. In extreme cases, you can reset the data or reflash, but these are drastic measures.
