What is the difference between 3G and 4G and which is better?

Today, almost all smartphones support the third generation of mobile communications (3G), and some models support fourth-generation mobile communications (4G). In the mobile phone salon, when buying a smartphone, managers will probably offer a device with 4G support. Does the buyer really need it? And what is the difference between 4G and 3G?

3G (third-generation mobile communication technology) is a set of services that combines high-speed mobile access to the Internet, as well as radio technology.

3G is built on the basis of packet data. This type of communication works on the border of the decimeter and centimeter range, the data transfer rate is up to 3.6 Mbit / s. Such access to the Internet allows you to not only quickly download pages of sites or pictures, but also watch videos online.

3G includes five family standards: UWC-136, DECT, TD-CDMA / TD-SCDMA, CDMA2000 / IMT-MC, and UMTS / WCDMA. The most popular standards in the world are CDMA2000 and UMTS, which are based on CDMA technology..

According to ITU regulations (International Telecommunications Union), third-generation networks must support the transmission speed:

  • 2048 Kbps for stationary objects.
  • 384 kbit / s for subscribers with a low speed of movement (up to 3 km / h).
  • 144 kbps for subscribers with high speed of movement (up to 120 km / h).

3G networks appeared in Russia in 2002.

4G (fourth-generation mobile communications technology) – the so-called generation of mobile communications with increased requirements, which include technologies that allow data transmission at a speed of 1 Gbit / s to stationary subscribers and 100 Mbit / s for mobile.

In 2012, WiMAX 2 and LTE Advanced were officially recognized as fourth-generation wireless communications standards. At the same time, development in the 4G area began back in 2000, when 3G was just being developed.

The development of 4G networks in our country began relatively recently, but the coverage of cities is growing at a very high speed. And although the coverage of 3G networks is not an example above, in the near future, fourth-generation communications will certainly be present in every Russian city.

Which is better: 4G or 3G?

In most cases, it is argued that it is better to purchase a smartphone with support for 4G networks and this is a true statement. Why?

You can often hear that 3G is enough for a simple user. True, but do not forget about the speed limits in connection with the third generation. So, in the case of 4G, the download speed of pictures increases, the map is loaded faster in the application, it is possible to watch HD clips online. In the case of 3G, there are speed limits, so the pictures load slower, and there may be problems viewing HD clips. So if your city has support for fourth-generation networks, you should give preference to a device with 4G.
